LED Package Lights Up Commander Cabins

Twin Commander Aircraft’s new passenger-cabin LED lighting kit is proving to be popular with owners and operators –– most of the initial stock of kits has been sold, and a second batch of kits has been ordered by Twin from the manufacturer.

The drop-in LED package, available as Custom Kit 190, replaces older-technology fluorescent-bulb systems on 690A model and later turboprop-powered Twin Commanders with lighter, brighter, longer-lasting LED lighting. The eight LED lights are a simple remove-and-replace with existing fluorescent bulbs, using existing receptacles in the passenger cabin.

Early reports from service centers that have accomplished the update are that it is a simple, easy installation and the new LED lights cast a nice, even distribution of light throughout the passenger cabin.

Brad Barker has installed the LED kit on the 690A that his company, Airborne Support, operates. “Everything about it is a win,” he said. “It consumes less power, is less fragile, and is much more reliable” than the florescent system it replaces, he said. “I like the color temperature of the light, too. It’s more of a natural light, and more even. And there’s no flickering.”

Printed circuit boards replace four power supplies mounted on the aft pressure bulkhead. The boards plug into the existing wiring harness and mount to the aft pressure bulkhead in place of the old power supply boxes. No additional equipment or wiring is required to install the LED lighting package.
