HID Light Kit Replaces Standard Landing Lights

A minor modification to the new High Intensity Discharge (HID) light system for Twin Commanders is complete, and the finished kits are ready to ship to authorized Twin Commander Service Centers.

The HID retrofit light kit replaces the standard wing-mounted landing lights and, on aircraft so equipped, the nose-mounted recognition lights.

The new HID lights are mounted in the recessed, covered ports used in the nose recognition light kit, and serve as both landing lights and recognition lights. One light is aimed straight ahead and the other slightly downward for maximum visibility of the runway at night, and maximum conspicuity of the Twin Commander to other aircraft in flight night or day.

Installation of the HID lights, and removal of the standard landing lights, removes the airspeed limitation for extension of the standard lights. Extending the wing-mounted lights at high indicated airspeeds is a major cause of maintenance problems in the system. The standard wing-mounted landing light system has been problematic to maintain because replacement parts are difficult to obtain.

The HID lights are at least as bright as the standard tungsten landing lights, but with an average life of 2,000 hours, should provide far longer life.

To order an HID light kit for your Twin Commander, contact an authorized Twin Commander Service Center.
